A glaucoma diagnosis can feel overwhelming.

It’s natural to ask questions like, “Will I lose my vision?” or “Is there a way to fix this?”

Glaucoma is a lifelong condition that requires close management, but here’s the encouraging part: with proper care and regular monitoring, you may be able to preserve the vision you still have and continue living life on your terms.

At Lifeview Glaucoma Center, our mission is to be by your side through every step of this journey—providing the monitoring, guidance, and care you need to give your eyes the best possible chance of long-term protection.

Glaucoma: A Silent but Serious Condition

Glaucoma is often called the “silent thief of sight.”

Why? Because in its early stages, most people feel perfectly fine.

There’s usually no pain, no redness, and often no obvious changes to vision until damage is advanced. By the time you notice vision loss, the disease has already affected your optic nerve.

This is why regular eye exams and follow-up visits are not optional—they are essential. Glaucoma management is about staying ahead of damage before it changes your daily life.

The Goal of Glaucoma Care: Slow the Progression

Glaucoma care focuses on slowing or stabilizing the disease. Every patient’s journey is different, but the overall goal is the same: to reduce pressure inside the eye and protect the optic nerve.

Here’s how that happens:

  • Medications (usually eye drops). These lower eye pressure and are often the first line of defense.

  • Laser procedures. Treatments like Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) can improve fluid drainage in the eye.

  • Surgery. For advanced or resistant cases, surgical options like trabeculectomy or shunts may be recommended.

But here’s the key: treatments are not “set and forget.” Your eye pressure can change, the optic nerve can weaken, and medications may lose effectiveness. That’s why ongoing monitoring is critical.

Why Regular Monitoring Matters

Glaucoma doesn’t follow a predictable path. Some patients progress quickly, others slowly. Without monitoring, it’s impossible to know whether treatment is still working.

At Lifeview Glaucoma Center, monitoring involves:

  • Eye pressure checks (IOP). Even small increases in pressure can be harmful over time.

  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). This advanced scan shows microscopic changes in the optic nerve, often before vision loss occurs.

  • Visual field testing. This measures how well you see in different parts of your vision—catching early blind spots you may not notice.

  • Optic nerve evaluation. A careful exam to assess nerve health and compare changes over time.

Each appointment creates a “map” of your glaucoma journey. When we compare today’s results with last year’s—or even last month’s—we can see trends and adjust treatment before more damage happens.

The Role You Play in Protecting Your Vision

Managing glaucoma is a partnership. Here’s what you can do to give yourself the best chance of preserving your sight:

  1. Take your medications as prescribed. Even occasional missed doses can lead to eye pressure spikes that damage your optic nerve.

  2. Never skip follow-ups. You may feel fine, but glaucoma can progress silently. Every appointment matters.

  3. Track your symptoms. If you notice increased glare, halos, or new blind spots, let us know right away.

  4. Prioritize overall health. High blood pressure, diabetes, and poor circulation can worsen glaucoma. Keeping these under control helps your eyes, too.

  5. Protect your eyes. Sunglasses, safe exercise, and avoiding smoking all support long-term eye health.
